The Docklands Light Railway’s Beckton depot is being expanded to accommodate the new B23 trains being introduced to accommodate more passengers.
Transport for London’s main contractor is Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. Bauer Technologies has secured the specialist piling contract.
Bauer’s scope of work involves the installation of 228 bearing piles of 600mm diameter. Of these, 85 will have to be installed through pre-bored eight-metre deep temporary liners to prevent contamination pathways. Bauer will also sink and 334 secant wall piles of 750mm diameter.
Piles will be installed to depths of up to 26.5 metres, using its BG30 rigs operating in continuous flight auger (CFA) mode, penetrating the dense Lambeth and Thanet Sand strata to support a new maintenance building. This structure will include a train-lifting road, craneage, and under-train access pits, all essential for both the final assembly and ongoing maintenance of the new train fleet.
The project is on the former Beckton Gas Works brownfield site so additional environmental measures are required throughout construction to mitigate ground contamination risks and health hazards
The expansion also includes the extension of southern sidings and the creation of new northern sidings to accommodate 15 complete train units.
