The new RL Hughes Primary School will be a single-storey, 2,250 sqm building, erected on the playing field of the existing school.
With capacity for 420 pupils, the design prioritises direct external access for all classrooms, encouraging outdoor learning and interaction with nature. The project will also include new sports pitches and car parking facilities.
The Galliford Try team has worked with the school to refine the footprint of the building so as to increase the available external play space for early years pupils. The early contractor engagement process proved invaluable in ensuring the school's vision could be fully realised, the company said.
Galliford Try will exploit the use of precast concrete elements, just as it did on the nearby St Anne's Primary School project, to speed construction.
Galliford Try education director Claire Jackson said: “This project is not just about creating a high-quality, sustainable learning environment, it’s also about listening to the needs of the school and community and delivering a design using our ‘optimum school’ principles that truly works for them. We look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to bring this vision to life."
The £15.6m contract was awarded through the Department for Education’s S21 framework.
