Kier has signed a 拢139m contract with Severn Trent Water to upgrade Wanlip sewage treatment works in Leicestershire.
Expansion of the facility is designed to serve a growing population, meet tighter environmental standards, improve water quality and increase the site鈥檚 long-term resilience. Critically, the works will increase dry weather flow capacity by 24%, and full flow to treatment by around 20%.
Contract signing follows an early contractor involvement phase with Kier, during which enabling works and detailed design development were completed.
Main works are now starting and are planned to be completed in 2028.

The programme includes:
- a new dry weather flow rising main from Abbey pumping station
- a flow control system for the inlet works
- four new 6-millimetre two-dimensional inlet screens and screening handling units
- an upgraded grit removal system
- four glass-fused-to-steel storm storage tanks providing 14,841 cubic metres of usable storage
- a new tertiary solids removal plant
- chemical storage and dosing systems to support phosphorus removal
- a Monitoring Certification Scheme-compliant flow monitoring system
- high and low voltage system upgrades, new motor control centres and transformers
- new pumping stations, interconnecting pipework, drainage, and civil engineering works
- integration with new supervisory control and data acquisition systems via Severn Trent's operational technology network.
Severn Trent capital delivery and commercial director James Jesic said: 聽鈥淚t鈥檚 exceedingly rare for us to award contracts of this size and it really speaks to the scale of these upgrades at Wanlip and our commitment to improving our infrastructure, delivering a reliable high-performing service for our customers, and protecting the environment.鈥
Andy Lingham, managing director of water within Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks, said: 鈥淭his is a significant project for Severn Trent, and we鈥檙e pleased to be bringing our expertise to help deliver it. Our relationship spans more than 20 years, and this is one of many projects we鈥檒l be delivering in this AMP8 cycle. Collaboration will be key to making it a success, with all parties co-located in our new welfare village, working together to ensure safe, efficient, and successful delivery.鈥
