Wates is building a 30,700m2 factory that comprises a three-storey manufacturing unit and a four-storey office facility. It is designed to produce more than 48,000 tonnes of sugary confectionery every year.
Haribo UK managing director Herwig Vennekens said: “After two years of planning it’s great to finally get to the stage where we are setting the foundations that support our plans for growth within the UK.â€
In addition to general mechanical and electrical equipment the project also includes compressed air, a packaged chiller to provide chilled water and a dual fuel steam boiler. Interserve said that it was investigating the use of nearly 300 prefabricated horizontal service modules on the project. Works are scheduled to start on site in May 2014 with completion scheduled for spring 2015.
Haribo plans a future investment of a combined heat & power (CHP) engine for the scheme, which will not only provide a primary source of energy for the mechanical services, but also help power the production process.
