The £8m contract will see Wates build a 2,600 sq m five-storey further and higher education college.
Designed by architect IBI Taylor Young, the college building will use solar panels to heat water and a rainwater-harvesting tank. It is designed to have a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.
The first phase of construction will see Wates assemble the building’s steel frame, which will be pre-treated to minimise the build programme ahead of completion in January 2014. The contractor has also committed to avoid sending any site waste to landfill.
Wates was appointed to the project via the North West Construction Hub (NWCH).
Regional director Tony Shenton said: “We have an excellent site team in place to start construction and we look forward to building what will become a flagship further and higher education facility for the community. The delivery of new buildings calls for an open book approach and the partnership facilitated by the North West Construction Hub will ensure that this project delivers on the educational needs of the college for generations to come.â€
