The college, which will become the first UTC in Yorkshire and one of only 18 across the UK, will have a capacity for 600 students aged 14 to 19 years. The facility will provide specialist vocational learning within the engineering and digital sectors.
Wates was appointed main contractor for the project . Â Planning permission was granted in August and the project is due for completion before September 2013.
The three-storey building has been designed by HLM Architects and features a five-aside size football pitch on the roof to maximise space at its city centre location.
Wates regional managing director Phil Harrison said:  “We have pooled our extensive knowledge and experience in education to develop, alongside our architects HLM, a groundbreaking centre of innovation that puts Yorkshire once again at the very front of original thinking. From the outset of this project we will fulfil our commitment to providing a raft of local training opportunities, which will significantly underpin the UTC’s ethos of developing the skills of the city’s young people.â€
